Lets bring youth football out of the dark ages
I had a conversation today with someone connected with a youth league and they were very unhappy that some areas try to put all their good players on one team and the less experienced ones on another. He/she felt it was so unfair to the second team and you know what? Under our current system he/she is absolutely right because the “B” team would have to play against the “A” team instead of other “B” teams. My questions is this, “Why not have “A” and “B” teams in every area that has more than one team? Help me this is making my head hurt.

The purpose of youth football is to teach all the players how to play good fundamental football and become good football players that can feed the local high school football programs. What is ludicous is to think that youth football coaches are so good and all knowing that they can determine who the good and bad players are going to be. In this area there is not an effort to make all the teams “equal”, the effort is to make them be composed of about the same number of players. That way if properly taught how to play all the teams can be competitive. The big difference between football and baseball/basketball is that the number of players that are required at the high school level are much smaller and by singling out the better players in their youth helps them be the better players in high school. It also causes many kids to decide not to play those sports in high school. Football is different. In order for a high school to have a good football program they need as many players with good sound fundamentals on the team as possible. The structure proposed in this league goes completely against this concept.

Funny you don’t have a problem with youth coaches “choosing” which players will be on a travel team if it is baseball and basketball but with football it is a problem. It hasn’t been suggested that the youth who would be placed on a “b” team wouldn’t play high school, quite the contrary. They would have a better chance of developing their skills and improving by playing with players of similar ability - instead of getting ran over by bigger, stronger kids.

I do have a problem with youth coaches choosing who gets to play on the travel teams, however because these games are more individually oriented I really don’t care about them. It is by playing with full range of players that they learn how to play against all players and how to play as a team.

For you to indicate that baseball and basketball are not as “team” oriented show how little you actually know about either sport. Perhaps you meant to say wrestling.

For you to say that baseball and basketball are as much a “team” sport as football indicates how little you know about football.

Now that was an original thought. All three sports require teammates and all participants are dependent on others to succeed. No one is more “team” oriented than any other, they are all different. For example; a pitcher cannot succeed without a catcher and a basketball player must pass the ball in bounds to someone else. Let’s elevate the conversation.

Bubb do you have have any idea of how stupid you sound, if there is A and B teams and the a teams play each other and the b teams play each other then that makes every game more challenging and improves the players skills. Because the quality of the games are better. So when they get into high school even those who were on the B team improved because they played someone of their talent. Come on it is not that hard.

Definately makes closer games does not make the players play better football. Also doesn’t make the players better. Players are made better by learning to compete and play with the best players.

Bubb you said this “Players are made better by learning to compete and play with the best players.’ Just like i said because if a A team plays an A team that has the same skill level than they get better. It is simply not that difficult.
