Youth Football in Idaho

Youth football in Idaho needs to improve in both quality and quantity of games. Old mindsets of trying to keep all the teams “equal” while pretending to play for a championship is just silly. Basketball and baseball (two vastly inferior games in my opinion) figured it all out long ago. Create leagues and schedule games for the level of talent - either competitive or recreational. The entire concept of “A” and “B” teams was initially developed in baseball and continues with great success to this day. Basketball has also copied this model, the Premier League in Idaho Falls is not nearly the same as the local Parks and Rec leagues formed throughout the valley. So why not football?

After serving many years as a youth football coach in many different leagues.(including the current one in Idaho Falls) I am delighted to see that some people have finally realized how necessary it is to have different divisions for youth football as to make teams more competitive. Which will be more fun for young football players.

It makes so much sense I don’t understand why it wasn’t done 30 years ago.

What is silly, and what shows that you have absolutely no concept of the game of football, is to compare the game of football to the games of baseball and basketball. Both baseball and basketball are games with relatively small number of players which require a small number of specific skills. With these sports the kids that do these few activites more times than anyone else will be the best. A kid who throws 10,000 pitches, or shoots 10,000 baskets are going to be better then everyone else. It really doesn’t matter how good of an overall athlete they are. You can have a kid that was not good enough to “make” the travel teams end up being much better athletes but not be better baseball or basketball players because they were not given the opportunity to put in the time.

Football players on the other hand are completely dependant on their size attitute and intellegence. These things change both for the good and bad over the years leading up to high school football. Many times the kid who is the biggest running back in youth football gets passed up in size by others by the time they get to HS. Because of this it is very important that as many kids as possible get taught how to work hard, run hard and hit hard throughout their playing time.

For youth coaches to pick who is going to be the great high school players when they are in 5th 6th and 7th grade is totally rediculous and will only hurt the high school program.

Bubb, you have offered the biggest red herring I have ever seen. Your comments about what it takes to be a good baseball and basketball players are so uniformed I’ll let them stand on their own.

Lets look at your football players comments. “Football players on the other hand are completely dependent on their size attitude and intelligence. These things change both for the good and bad over the years leading up to high school football.” For you to suggest that these three things determine success is just stupid. Ask any coach worth his weight and he will tell you that the best way for a player to improve would be for them to participate in games where the competition and teammates were of similar ability. Confidence is key. And just like I would never put Bubb in an honors English class I wouldn’t place players on teams where their skills are just to low. Let them play against others of similar ability so all can enjoy the game.

Most youth players never play high school so let’s stop pretending the youth program is supposed to create high school athletes.

Vikings31, why beat up on Bubb for his thoughts on this deal? What about your comment? For you to say, “…let’s stop pretending the youth program is supposed to create high school athletes”, is utterly and obviously senseless, illogical, and untrue; contrary to all reason or common sense; laughably foolish and false and let’s not forget irrational, silly and of course ludicrous!

Are you kidding me?! Every parent puts their youngin’s in “youth” sports so they’ll have a leg up when they get to the high school level. In fact, that seems to be the exact reason the Pinnacle league was developed. Using their own words, “Our goal is simple; we want to build better football players”. Why, so they’ll just be better? NO!, so they’ll be better prepared to play when they get to the high school ranks.

Come on now, let’s not pretend like that’s not the real reason parents sign little Johnny for football or any other sport for that matter. The goal is to have them prepared to play when they reach high school, otherwise it’s a waste of time, money and effort.

Almost half of the youth that enroll in Grid Kid as a 5th grader play in the 8th grade, give or take depending on the year. Grid Kid, to my knowledge, is advocating the enjoyment of youth football and tries to keep teams as “equal” as they can. This is quite different from school football where the goal is to win.

Upon entering high school many football players have to be corrected on many techniques they were taught at the youth level. Not the fault of the many volunteers just a fact.

For you to state that “…every parent puts their youngin’s in youth sports so they’ll have a leg up…” is comical at best and ignorant at worst. It’s the youth who want to play and are gifted with the ability to do so that play in high school. For you to speak for everyone is kinda funny.

I have coached at the high school level and have spent thousands of hours with young players trying to learn and improve based on their own skill set and can tell you that any young man who is talented (with no experience) will quickly pass the 5 year grid kid players with parents who want him to play.
